more than depressing

We had quite a bit of rain last week and when I went downstairs for a new book I found that the bottom shelf of the bookcase next to the outside wall was all wet The basement had water seeping in from a crack in the sidewalk and those old particle board bookcases just soaked up that water. All the books on that shelf are wet and mildewed. The Peter David books are still in print and easily replaced since they're paperback anyway but the series he wrote under the name David Peters is out-of-print, I believe and much harder to find. I'm glad I caught it before it reached the next section with a couple of the first editions.
I'm going to be bringing boxes home from work to pack up the bookcase until I can build another bookcase or three! I have now filled in the crack with a cement filler so hopefully that will stop the leak, not that I will trust that corner any time soon. I'll be checking it with every rain storm for the next 10 years!

Ouch. Oh dear, those poor, poor books. Our basement has flooded several times, but we've never been unlucky enough to have books in the way. My deepest condolences.

It's a shame but fortunately they're still readable, just no longer in pristine condition.
I purposely built the bookshelves one and a half inches above the floor so water wouldn't get to the books. I didn't think of the wood absorbing the water.
