The war with the Republic of Haven has resumed...disastrously for the Star Kingdom of Manticore.
Admiral Lady Dame Honor Harrington, Steadholder and Duchess Harrington, the single victorious Allied commander of the opening phase of the new war, has been recalled from the Sidemore System to command Eighth Fleet. Everyone knows Eighth Fleet is the Alliance's primary offensive command, which makes it the natural assignment for the woman the media calls "the Salamander." But what most of the public doesn't know is that not only are the Star Kingdom and its Allies badly outnumbered by the Republic's new fleet, but that the odds are going to get steadily worse.
Eighth Fleet's job is to somehow prevent those odds from crushing the Alliance before the Star Kingdom can regain its strategic balance. It's a job which won't be done cheaply. Honor Harrington must meet her formidable responsibilities with inferior forces even as she copes with tumultuous changes in her personal and public life.
The alternative to victory is total defeat, yet this time the COST of victory will be agonizingly high.
This is definitely my favorite series. He has two other series in this universe based on other characters from the books plus a series of short stories based in this universe.
Wow hardly describes my feelings when I finished this book. I had hoped to read it all in one day but didn't get the time off. Even so...Due to the Star Kingdom's technological edge in military hardware, the war was over & the peace was to be had if it hadn't of been for the abrupt change in the Star Kingdom's government due to the death of the Prime Minister in an earlier volume & the machinations of a Senator in the Republic in the last volume. The Republic has gained enough new technology, especially with the Erewhonese shifting their loyalties to the Republic due to the treatment of the Star Kingdom's Oppositional Government, to start a new campaign of war since the peace talks have broken down. Then the Republic's President finds out about the Senator's shenanigans with the peace treaty. Unfortunately, he's been killed in an air car accident & there is no proof that he was responsible although she & her Cabinet "know" it. So she's trying to restart the peace negotiations after the Republic's already fired the first shot restarting the war. And if that's not enough, there's a third party that nobody knows about doing it's level best to keep the war between the Star Kingdom & the Republic going strong. They don't want a cease-fire.
