Night life

A shrill noise shatters the silence bringing the sleeper to the edge of consciousness. "Whaa...," he thinks, lying there drowsily trying not to wake up. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. He's awake now. "Did I reset the timer after the cookies were done? No, it would have gone off long before this. It can't be the smoke alarm, I put in fresh batteries on New Year's Day." He wraps his robe around him as he heads for the kitchen and stands in the kitchen doorway waiting for the noise to go off again. But all he hears is the house creaking and groaning around him as it dissipates the heat of the day and settles into the night's chillness. Turning on a light, he reads the silent timer: 0:00. So, being careful not to dislodge any spiders onto his head, he unhooks the smoke detector from the wall, opens the battery compartment and gives the battery a slight nudge to make sure it's securely seated before hanging it back up. Then he stands at the basement stairs listening for any unusual sounds down there. A couple minutes of silence is his reward and he heads back to bed hoping for a decent nights sleep.
