It began in San Francisco before the turn of the century, a mystery so deeply hidden that not even Quincannon could solve it completely. Then it continued. Marcia Muller writes the Elena Oliverez series; her husband, Bill Pronzini writes the Quincannon series. This is a combination of both - Elena in the 1980s and Quincannon in the 1890s. They did the same thing with Marcia's Sharon McCone series when Bill's "nameless detective" (Wolf) appeared in a couple books in that series. I've put Bill Pronzini on my list of authors to look for.
